The film Pemandi Jenazah tells the story of a young woman in a village named Lela, played by Aghniny Haque. Like a tradition passed down from her grandmother, Lela is asked to continue the work of her mother, Siti, played by Djenar Maesa Ayu, as a corpse bather. Indeed, since childhood, Lela has always accompanied her mother when she was tasked with washing corpses. Lela's mother often gives insight and advice that bathing corpses is a noble job. However, every time she washed Lela's body, she always said that she couldn't do it. In fact, one day Lela wanted to

try something new to quit her job as a corpse bather, so she argued with her mother regarding her desire. Until one night, Lela was shocked to find that her mother had died suddenly and mysteriously after her mother's best friend, Ida, had died first. Mrs. Lela and Mrs. Ida died after vomiting blood and having convulsions. Lela's nightmare began when she had to wash her mother's body because no one else could do it in the village where she lived. During the process of washing her mother's body, Lela discovered something odd about the incident. It didn't stop there, another friend of her mother, namely Mrs. Ana,

became the next victim. These tragic and consecutive deaths make Lela suspect that there is something to do with secrets from the past. Not wanting to remain silent, Lela is determined to uncover the mystery behind the death of her mother and her mother's best friend. Apart from that, Lela also wants to know the real facts about the unnatural deaths that happened to them. The film, directed by Hadrah Daeng Ratu and screenwriter Lele Laila, successfully displays many scary and tense scenes, making the audience feel an unusual experience. This horror genre film, which has been showing in all Indonesian cinemas since February 22 2024, also highlights the profession of body bathers who are close to the supernatural.
